Putu Edi Yastika, the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, has won the Outstanding Oral Presentation Award at the ISRM 4th Young Scholars’ Symposium on Rock Mechanics

Putu Edi Yastika, a doctoral student at the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, has won the Outstanding Oral Presentation Award at the ISRM 4th Young Scholars’ Symposium on Rock Mechanics, which was organized by International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM). The symposium was held in Cheju Island, South Korea, on May 11 (Thu) - 12 (Fri), and 250 people from 19 countries took part in it. Yastika presented his study entitled "Discussion on procedure of long-term land subsidence monitoring by multi-temporal DInSAR (Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar)" with Professor Norikazu Shimizu, Deputy Director of Center for Research and Application of Satellite Remote Sensing. It was selected as the best presentation out of 150 presentations. The purpose of this research is to propose a method for continuous monitoring subsidence that has been occurring for long years over an extensive area in Semarang City, Indonesia, by using SAR satellites. He also presented the results of a field investigation that was carried out in March of this year jointly by Yamaguchi University, Institute of Technology, Bandung, and Diponegoro University. The paper was highly praised for its originality in combining the advanced satellite technology and perspectives of rock engineering.

I Nyoman Sudi Parwata and Kien Nguyen Trung, doctoral students, and Shota Amafuji , a master course students, were also attended the symposium from the Shimizu laboratory and selected to make oral presentations. Parwata gave a presentation entitled "Digital Elevation Model generation by InSAR based on ALOS-PALSAR data in a small area including steep slope of a limestone quarry". Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) provided the SAR data of "ALOS" and "ALOS-2" to the above researches. The ISRM 5th Young Scholars’ Symposium on Rock Mechanics will be held in Japan in 2019 by Professor Shimizu as the chairman.
