International Cooperation Talk Show “Empowering Young Africans to Live Their Dreams through Baseball: Sports x Development x SDGs”

Yamaguchi Prefecture JICA Desk and Yamaguchi University co-organized International Cooperation Talk Show “Empowering Young Africans to Live Their Dreams through Baseball: Sports x Development x SDGs” online on June 22nd, 2021.Thirty-five people inside and outside of the campus participated in this event.

Mr. Tomonari delivered a lecture on his lifework activities on promotion of baseball in Africa. He had more than thirty year working experiences in the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and stayed in Ghana, Tanzania and South Sudan during his services. He introduced his activities for promoting baseball and encouraged African young through baseball in each country. One Ghanaian boy said to hm, “I like baseball. All team mates cheer for me when I am in batter's box. Even the opponents concentrated on me because I may get a hit and hit a homerun. I can become a hero. Baseball is democratic.”

In Tanzania, a slogan of “Discipline”, “Respect”, and “Justice” was introduced among the Young baseball players. Their educational achievement in the school were improved. As a result, an education official, school principal and teachers came to be interested in baseball in those countries. Mr. Tomonari said, “Through playing sports, people are fostered and sound society is built.” The power that baseball is equipped with for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is impressed.
