Professor Jim Hanson, from the Department of Civil Engineering at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), San Luis Obispo, visited Yamaguchi University in December 2023. Associate Professor Azizul Moqsud of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering chaired the session and organized Professor Hanson’s visit.
Professor Hanson is a pioneer in Geoenvironmental Engineering, both in the USA and globally. He is a founding member of the USA-Japan joint workshop on Geoenvironmental Engineering and serves as a bridge between the researchers in the two countries.
At Yamaguchi University’s Tokiwa campus, Professor Hanson gave a special lecture titled “Climate Impacts of
Gas Emissions from Municipal Solid Waste Landfills.”  In his lecture, he discussed current trends in sanitary landfill design in the USA and measures to counter landfill gas emission problems.
Approximately 100 participants including students and faculty members, attended the lecture. A question and discussion session followed, where students engaged with Professor Hanson.
