Erasmus+ Staff Mobility: Professor Luís Miguel Nunes from the University of Algarve, Portugal, Delivers a Special Lecture

(2025/10/1)

As part of the Erasmus+ staff mobility program, the Faculty of Engineering at Yamaguchi University hosted Professor Luís Miguel Nunes from the University of Algarve, Portugal, for a special lecture series from June 30 to July 4, 2025.

The lectures focused on the theme of Environmental Risk Assessment. Professor Nunes covered the fundamental concepts and principles of environmental risk management, introducing common tools and methodologies. He also explored the application of risk management modeling and highlighted the importance of risk communication. In addition to the lectures, a practical exercise was conducted using Excel, where participants estimated the health risks associated with arsenic in rice, a staple food in Japan, and proposed measures to mitigate these risks. The sessions were highly interactive, with lively discussions between Professor Nunes, faculty and students of Yamaguchi University, providing a valuable opportunity to deepen understanding.

The exchange aimed to not only share knowledge on teaching methods and the development of engineering degree programs but also to advance specific research projects in environmental risk assessment of pollutants and strengthen academic collaboration. This program is expected to enhance the partnership between the University of Algarve and Yamaguchi University and improve the educational and instructional capabilities of both institutions.

Yamaguchi University remains committed to actively promoting such international exchanges to revitalize education and research and to contribute to the development of global talent.
