On October 1, 2026, Associate Professor MD.Azizul Moqsud of theCivil and Environmental Engineering Field , Graduate School of Sciences and Technology for Innovation,Yamaguchi University, delivered a special outreach lecture to 35 third-year students of the Department of Electronic Mechanical Engineering at Yamaguchi Prefectural Kudamatsu Technical High School. The lecture was entitled “Bioelectricity Generation from Plants with the Help of Microorganisms.”

Thislecture was organized as part of the school’s “Learn from Companies! Local x Tech Inquiry Project” in connection with the he environmental conservation field of “Basic Biology” and “Inquiry Research.” As achieving carbon neutrality and a decarbonized society becomes an important challenge, the purpose was to provide high school students, who will bear the next generation, with an opportunity to learn about new energy technologies and think about local environmental and energy issues.

During the lecture, after explaining the current global energy situation surrounding the world and future energy challenges,  he introduced basic principles and research examples of the Plant Microbial Fuel Cell (PMFC), a technology hat utilizes the functions of plants and microorganisms in soil to generate bioelectricity. He explained the potential of a new green energy technology with low environmental impact that obtains electricity while utilizing organic matter generated by plant photosynthesis and the action of microorganisms living around the roots.

In particular, the students showed high interest in the unique mechanism of generating electricity while growing plants. It also introduced that new technologies are born from the fusion of seemingly different fields such as renewable energy, bioelectricity, microorganisms, plants, and environmental conservation, serving as an opportunity to think about the role of engineering research toward a future sustainable society.

At Kudamatsu Technical High School, students in the Department of Electronic Mechanical Engineering plan to set “Plant Microbial Fuel Cell” as their inquiry research project theme, actually manufacture the apparatus, and conduct electricity generation experiments. It is expected that this lecture will serve as a catalyst for the students to further develop their own experiments and inquiry research.

At our university, through outreach lectures and educational/research exchanges with high schools in the future as well, we will provide local high school students with opportunities to touch upon cutting-edge science and engineering research, and work on nurturing next-generation human resources who can contribute to achieving carbon neutrality and a sustainable society.
