The short-term language training in the Philippines (study abroad program of the Faculty of Global and Science Studies) took place from August 25th to September 22nd and was successfully completed. Here is a report from the faculty who accompanied the students.

From August 25 to September 22, 85 first-year undergraduate students participated in a one-month language study program on Boracay Island, Philippines. Through this program, students not only improved their English skills but also had the invaluable experience of broadening their perspectives as global citizens through cultural exchange.

The classes were a combination of group lessons and one-to-one sessions, covering various skills such as speaking, writing, listening, as well as test preparation for IELTS and TOEIC. Each day, students attended eight classes from morning until evening. The local teachers were friendly and approachable, allowing students to enjoy interactions beyond just classroom lessons.

Additionally, activities were organized on Saturdays. During the first weekends activity, called “Island Hopping,” students communicated in English with local guides as they explored the islands around Boracay.

They enjoyed activities such as cave exploration, snorkeling, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) at various spots. Both the students and teachers shared a great time together, using English as a common language.

In their daily lives, students also had many learning opportunities.

For example, when shopping at local supermarkets, they had to communicate with the local people, and when using local transportation, all communication was in English. These situations provided students with an excellent chance to hone their practical English skills in real-life contexts, different from those in Japan.

Through this program, students not only improved their English proficiency but also greatly enhanced their intercultural understanding and communication skills. We hope that the experiences and growth they gained this summer will be valuable assets for their future learning and career development.
