Call for Paper

Information for Contributors:

The Journal of East Asian Studies is published, annually by the Graduate School of East Asian Studies (GSEAS) of Yamaguchi University, in order to promote research activities focused upon on East Asia, to provide a forum for publicly disseminate scholarly works, and to facilitate academic and professional exchange of ideas and research results. Contributors must present the letter of recommendation written by a member of the faculty of the Graduate School of East Asian Studies, Yamaguchi University.

The geographic area that the Journal covers is understood as “East Asia” in a broadly-defined sense, the Eastern part of Asia. The subject areas are covered from any academic fields.

While the major categories of submission to the Journal are articles and book reviews, the journal also occasionally publishes reports and Review articles. The contributor shall indicate to which category their submission belongs, but the final decision of category will be made by the editorial board. Articles should have a clearly defined research theme, include clear and appropriate analysis and logical conclusion, and therefore, contain original contribution in the chosen field of study. Reports includes reports from foreign research works and field studies, and intermediate, reports or documentation from on-going research. Review articles are those which review past and current research within a specified field of study and give general summary and perspectives on the direction of future research.

Reception of Manuscripts:

  1. The deadlines for reception of the manuscripts are April 15 (the first reception) and October 15 (the second reception). Submitted manuscripts will not be returned regardless of the result of the review procedure.
  2. The reception of manuscripts shall be limited to one for each person. In addition, the first author of any manuscript cannot be the first author or co-author of the other manuscript.
  3. The number of papers published in the same issue is limited to one for each person. The first author of the manuscript whose publication was decided at the first reception cannot be submitted as either the first author or co-author at the second reception.
  4. Consecutive submissions to the next issue of the paper publisher are not permitted.
  5. If the manuscript applies to non-medical research involving human participants, a certificate indicating that the research has been approved by Yamaguchi University Review Committee for Non-Medical Research Involving Human Participants, or a certificate that can be regarded as equivalent must be submitted.

Manuscripts submitted for publication are vetted by the editorial board, and the final decision on adoption for publication shall rest with them. For each manuscript submitted as an “article”, two referees will be selected, and the editorial board will make its decision based on the results of referees’ review and recommendation.

The editorial board does not accept objections from contributors to research papers that are rejected as a result of peer review.

There is no fee for submission, nor payment to the author. The author will be given   thirty offprints free of charge. Additional offprints can be ordered at a nominal charge.

The copyright of the published article shall be assigned to its author in principle, provided that the editorial board has the right to reproduce or store electronically any article or part of an article contained in this journal without prior written permission of the author.

Guide to Authors:

  1. Languages of the Journal shall be Japanese or English.
  2. Maximum lengths of manuscript in Japanese is 40,000 words (vertical printing is allowed), 8,000 words in English, (including Tables and Figures). For Book Review, writing within 20,000 words in Japanese, and 3,000 words in English is standard. For Report, 20,000 words in Japanese, and for General Survey 40,000 words in Japanese are general limits.
  3. Abstract in either English or Japanese for each article shall be attached. The maximum lengths in Japanese are 800 words, and 300 words in English.
  4. The recommendation form and Manuscript should be submitted to the Graduate School of East Asian Studies Admission Office (Faculty of Economics), the former on paper, the latter as an electronic file, either in a USB drive, or in advance by e-mail as an attachment. The cover page should contain Title (and Subtitle) (in English also), author’s (and co-authors) name(s), affiliation, telephone and fax numbers, e-mail address, and data. The first page in the body of article contains the title of the article, no name of author(s) and affiliation shall appear in the main body of the manuscript.
  5. The final manuscript, if accepted for publication, after appropriate re-writing, should be submitted as a data file.
  6. Title and subtitle should be clear and simple expressing the main idea of the article.
  7. Foot Notes, Bibliography, and Appendix (if necessary) shall be attached at the end of the article.
  8. The sources of Table and Figure shall be clearly indicated. Figures should be made lucidly, since they are taken to printer as they appear.
  9. If permission for publication of Tables, Figures and Photographs is required, the author must obtain it.
