Education at our school

“Why is there an annex in a place like this?”

Many of the people who visit our school, especially those who come from far away, ask this question. The background to this question is as follows:

  1. Of the more than 200 schools affiliated with national universities across the country, this is the only “waterfront school” where you can see the ocean up close from the principal’s office and grounds.
  2. It is located in a scenic spot within a national park, making it an unusual location for an affiliated educational and research school, although it may be an appropriate location for a resort facility.
  3. Located at the tip of the Murozumi Peninsula that juts out into the Seto Inland Sea, it does not seem to have good transport access for an affiliated school that receives many visitors.

The location of our school may seem odd at first glance, but it has deep historical roots dating back to the mid-Edo period. While this area may seem inconvenient from today’s perspective, with land transport centered on roads and railways, it was a key transportation hub when maritime transport was the norm.

The Choshu clan established a public corporation called “Nikukata” here, developed a port, and made it a port of call for cargo ships, reaping large profits by selling the domain’s annual tax rice and local specialties. Many storehouses were built here, and merchants from inside and outside the domain gathered here, making the area very prosperous. It was also the place that built the economic foundation for the later movement to overthrow the shogunate. In the Meiji era, a county office was established here as the edge of a modern nation, then Yamaguchi Prefectural Industrial School was established to lead the modern industrialization, and in the Taisho era, Murozumi Normal School and Women’s Normal School were established to deal with the shortage of teachers in the prefecture, and the origins of our school lie in the establishment of their affiliated schools.

In other words, since the mid-Edo period, this place has been nothing but a place of activity that has faced the times and continued to produce the “people,” “organizations,” and “economy” that the times demand. These “traditions of the land” run deep in our educational activities. Our school has carefully nurtured activities that read the needs of the times, value practicality in real-world settings, and create original culture through collaboration.

This not only applies to the education of our students, but also to our student teaching practice as an affiliated school of the Faculty of Teacher Training, and to the training of young teachers in the area. As an affiliated school located in this area, we would like to continue to contribute to teacher training and the improvement of teacher quality through distinctive education. With the significance of our affiliated school being located here as a background, we would appreciate your understanding and support for our educational activities.

Lyrics

1

In the Seto mist, burning bright,

We lift our chests to clouds aglow in crimson light.

With hope held high, we march ahead

Ah, our dear Hikari Affiliated School!

As pure and far as the ocean’s tide,

So clear, so calm, our hearts with pride.

2

The green breeze gently comes our way,

As we lean by the seaside window each day.

Together we strive on the path of learning

Ah, our dear Hikari Affiliated School!

Like sturdy pines, so strong and true,

We grow with spirit ever renewing

3

Behold our beautiful hometown’s grace,

Where Mount Gabi’s colors shine in place.

Let the blossoms of culture bloom with pride

Ah, our dear Hikari Affiliated School!

With a fragrant history that forever abides
