Our Lab

The ciliate Paramecium species are model organisms widely used for various researches on eukaryotes. From 2012, Yamaguchi University has been acting as the core facility for Paramecium resources in the world under the National BioResource Project (NBRP) of the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED) to distribute various Paramecium strains worldwide (Representative of the NBRP-Paramecium: Prof. Masahisa Watarai). We collect, preserve and provide various Paramecium strains and their metadata (e.g. species names, syngens and mating types and so on) to researchers. NBRP-Paramecium is keeping more than 900 strains of 24 species. The numbers of strains and species preserved in NBRP-Paramecium is the largest one in the world. We also provide strains used for genome and transcriptome studies, and endosymbiont-bearing strains. In addition to forming the international Paramecium stock center through this project, we also offer technical training opportunities for researchers unfamilier with Paramecium. This project is responsible for the conservation of Paramecium species, too.
